Modbus RTU and TCP/IP installation and configuration for DEIF AGC 150

Prev Next

This article explains how to set up a RS-485/Modbus RTU or Ethernet/Modbus TCP/IP connection to a Calculus C06 gateway.

Objective

A technician must be able to choose the correct communication route, configure the AGC 150, connect it correctly to the Calculus C06 and verify communication.

Scope

This guide covers two supported communication routes between a DEIF AGC 150 and a Calculus C06: Modbus RTU over RS-485 and Modbus TCP/IP over Ethernet. It focuses on the DEIF communication settings, the physical connection and commissioning checks. Calculus gateway registration and platform configuration are outside the scope of this document.

Compatibility

The AGC 150 communication interfaces described in this guide are used across the supported AGC 150 family. Always verify the installed controller variant, firmware and project-specific gateway profile before changing settings.

Safety first

  • Carry out communication wiring de-energised where the installation procedure requires it.

  • Keep clear of mains, generator and breaker power terminals.

  • Only change the communication parameters listed in this guide. Do not change protection, breaker or application settings as part of a Modbus installation.

  • After commissioning, return the controller to the operating mode required by the generator application.

Caution!

Before wiring or changing settings, stop the genset and make sure it cannot start unexpectedly. For maintenance and wiring, DEIF specifies BLOCK mode so the controller cannot initiate start or breaker sequences. Do not select BLOCK while the genset is running.

Choose the communication method

Select the communication route defined by the assigned Calculus gateway profile. Use the matching section below and only configure the values required for that route.

Route

Use

RS-485 / Modbus RTU

AGC 150 RS-485 Port 1 (terminals 33/34/35) to the C06 3-pin RS-485 connector. Standard Calculus values in this guide: server ID 1, 9600 baud, 8N1.

Ethernet / Modbus TCP/IP

AGC 150 RJ45 Ethernet port to the C06 Ethernet port. Standard Calculus values in this guide: controller IP address 192.168.3.1 and unit/slave ID 1. Configure the subnet, C06 Ethernet address and Modbus TCP port according to the assigned Calculus profile.

Project settings

Choose the route from the assigned Calculus gateway profile. Do not select a protocol only because the connector is present. The communication route and all project-specific values must match the gateway profile.

Passwords and access

The AGC 150 has Customer, Service and Master password levels. The level required to change a parameter can be changed by the OEM. If a password is requested, use the authorised password for the machine.

Level

DEIF factory default

Customer

2000

Service

OEM configuration

If the default password does not work, the password or parameter access level may have been changed by the generator manufacturer. Do not reset unrelated settings to force access.

Controls used on the AGC 150

The navigation keys move through the menu, OK opens or confirms a selection, and BACK returns to the previous level. The Shortcut menu can be used to open Mode selection and select BLOCK before wiring or maintenance.

Option A: Modbus RTU

Configure Modbus RTU on the AGC 150

This guide uses RS-485 Port 1 because DEIF specifies that Port 1 is galvanically isolated. Port 2 is also available, but is not galvanically isolated.

  1. Stop the genset and make the installation safe. Select BLOCK mode for wiring or maintenance where applicable.

  2. Press OK to open the menu and navigate to Communication → RS485 → RS485 1 → Settings.

  3. Open parameter 7511 Ext. comm. ID 1 and set the value to 1.

  4. Open parameter 7512 Ext. comm.speed 1 and set the value to 9600 Baud.

  5. Verify that the Modbus serial format used by the installation is 8 data bits, no parity and 1 stop bit (8N1).

  6. Exit the menu and confirm/save the changes if prompted.

  7. Keep the controller in a safe mode until the wiring and communication checks are complete.

Alternative Port 2

If Port 2 must be used, the equivalent parameters are 7521 Ext. comm. ID 2 and 7522 Ext. comm.speed 2. Port 2 uses terminals 36 (A), 37 (GND) and 38 (B), and is not galvanically isolated.

Utility Software

The same parameters can also be configured from DEIF Utility Software (USW). Connect to the controller, use the authorised access level, and locate the RS-485 communication settings.

Connect RS-485 to the Calculus C06

For this guide, connect the Calculus C06 to AGC 150 RS-485 Port 1. DEIF documents terminals 33 to 35 as the isolated RS-485-1 connection.

Why Port 1?

RS-485 Port 1 is galvanically isolated. RS-485 Port 2 is not isolated. Unless the project wiring specifies otherwise, Port 1 is the preferred connection for this guide.

Interpret the C06 connector correctly

The C06 RS-485 connector is the top-left 3-pin connector. The visible left-to-right order changes when the detachable connector is removed and viewed from the screw side.

Practical check

Use function and wire colour as the reference: brown = A+ / Data+, white = B- / Data-, green = GND. Do not rely only on left/right position.

RS-485 cabling and termination

  • Use a shielded, twisted-pair RS-485 cable with approximately 120 ohm characteristic impedance.

  • Route the communication cable away from starter motor cables, contactors and other high-current or switching conductors.

  • Keep RS-485 topology as a bus/daisy chain and avoid long stubs.

  • Connect the shield according to the site grounding standard; a common approach is to earth the shield at one side only.

  • DEIF states that for EN60255 compliance, when the RS-485 wiring is longer than 10 m, terminal 34 (Port 1 GND) must be connected to GND.

  • Check the existing termination before adding resistors. A 120 ohm resistor is normally used at the ends of an RS-485 bus, not automatically at every device.

Option B: Modbus TCP/IP

Configure Modbus TCP/IP

Use the AGC 150 Ethernet interface when the assigned Calculus gateway profile uses Modbus TCP/IP. DEIF specifies a dedicated isolated, auto-detecting 10/100 Mbit RJ45 Ethernet port for Modbus, PC utility software and other supported network functions.

Determine the network values

Use the following standard Calculus values for the AGC 150: controller IP address 192.168.3.1 and unit/slave ID 1. Before commissioning, confirm the subnet, C06 Ethernet address and Modbus TCP port used by the assigned gateway profile. The controller and C06 must have different IP addresses in the same intended subnet.

Setting

Value to use

Controller IP address

192.168.3.1

Subnet mask

Use the subnet required for the C06 Ethernet network. The AGC 150 and C06 must be in the same intended subnet and use different IP addresses.

Network gateway

Use the project-specific network gateway only when required by the network design. This is an IP routing gateway value, not the Calculus C06 device address.

Modbus TCP port

Use the port in the assigned Calculus profile. Port 502 is commonly used for Modbus TCP.

Unit / slave ID

1

Important!

Never give the AGC 150 and C06 the same IP address. A duplicate address prevents reliable communication.

Configure Ethernet on the AGC 150

  1. Stop the genset and place the controller in a safe mode for commissioning where applicable.

  2. Open Settings → Communication → Ethernet setup on the AGC 150 display.

  3. Set the AGC 150 IP address to 192.168.3.1. Configure the subnet mask and network gateway according to the intended C06 Ethernet network.

  4. Alternatively, connect with DEIF Utility Software and open Ethernet setting (TCP/IP) → Network parameters.

  5. Write/confirm the changes. Network communication can briefly restart after network parameters are changed.

Connect Ethernet to the Calculus C06

Connect the AGC 150 RJ45 Ethernet port used for Modbus TCP/IP to the Ethernet port of the Calculus C06 using a suitable Ethernet cable. Keep this connection separate from the RS-485 wiring; only the communication route selected in the assigned gateway profile should be used for the Modbus connection.

Verify the TCP/IP connection

  • Verify that the Ethernet link/activity LEDs are active on the connected ports.

  • Verify that the AGC 150 IP address is 192.168.3.1 and that this is the controller address targeted by the assigned Calculus profile.

  • Verify that the C06 Ethernet address is different from the controller address and is in the same intended subnet.

  • Verify that the Modbus TCP unit/slave ID is set to 1 and that the Modbus TCP port matches the assigned Calculus profile.

  • Confirm that valid AGC 150 values are received during commissioning.
