Installing Calculus Digger

You can get Calculus Digger by navigating to https://updates.calculus.group/digger/ and clicking the Install button.
This will initiate a file download (setup.exe). Execute this file to start the installation process.

It’s possible that some additional components need to be installed.

You may get a notification that the publisher is not verified, but you can safely proceed.

Using Calculus Digger

Starting Digger from the Calculus portal

A convenient way to connect to a gateway, is by opening a tunnel connection right from the Calculus portal.
Go to the Gateways page, and click on the gateway you want to connect to. The Edit Gateway panel opens.
Click on the arrow next to the gateway Name, or alternatively click the Options button, and select Open in Digger.
Depending on your browser settings, you might get a notice that the site is attempting to launch Digger. Allow this launch.

The Digger application is launched, prompting you to log in.
After logging in, the available connections for the gateway are shown.
Select the connections you wish to open, and click on Open Tunnel.
A notification appears, informing you about the legal owner of the gateway. Acknowledge to continue.
Depending on your Windows security settings, you may need to confirm access to this tunnel from private, public, or domain networks. Please confirm.
You are now connected to the gateway.

Logging in to Calculus Digger

On startup, you will be prompted for your login details.
Use the same credentials as for the Calculus Portal.

For security reasons, two-factor authentication is required to use the application.
Open the Authenticator app on your mobile device and enter the code provided.

Hint!

When Digger is started, it automatically checks for updates, ensuring that you always have the latest version.

Calculus Digger main screen

After logging in, the Calculus Digger main screen opens.
By default you start with Connection 1 but if needed, additional tunnel connections can be selected by pressing the plus button.

In the field Search or Select Gateway, select the gateway you want to connect to.
Only gateways that are online, and linked to projects to which you have access, will be listed.

After selecting a gateway, the Ethernet and Serial/Modbus panels will show the available tunneling options.

Ethernet tunnels

By default, the Ethernet panel is shown, where all available ethernet connections for the selected gateway are listed.

Select the ethernet connections you need, and click on Open Tunnel to establish a connection.
Depending on your Windows security settings, you may need to confirm access to this tunnel from private, public, or domain networks.
You are now connected to the gateway.

Serial/Modbus tunnels

If you need to connect to a Modbus/RTU device, open the Serial/Modbus panel.

First, in the Select COM Port field, choose which local COM port you want to use for this connection.
Next, select the serial connections you need, and click on Open Tunnel to establish a connection.

Attention!

You must select a local COM port, and one or more remote ports, to establish a tunnel connection.

Gateway status page

All gateways have a built-in web page, which shows the current status of the device.
To view this page, first open an Ethernet tunnel connection to remote/local port 80.
Open a web browser and navigate to http://localhost. This opens the status page for the gateway.

Hint!

Please note that this is a HTTP connection. HTTP connections use port 80, while HTTPS use port 443.

Advanced features

Expert users might appreciate some of the advanced features, which become available when the Digger tool is launched from the command prompt or PowerShell, or when a Digger style URL is passed.
These advanced features can be helpful to automate administrative tasks, or streamline repititive tasks. Please refer to the Digger URL Routing Quick Reference document below.
