Data not showing: Data sources

Prev Next

Use this article when no relevant data appears in Current Activity and you want to verify whether the asset is correctly linked to a gateway and data source.

In this step, you check the data source configuration to ensure the gateway is reading data from the machine and linking it to the correct asset. You are doing this to identify configuration-related causes of missing data after ruling out connectivity, visibility, and hardware issues.

Incorrect gateway links, shared data sources, or mismatched connection settings can prevent data from being generated, even when the gateway itself is functioning correctly.

Open Data sources

To check the data sources:

  • Open the Edit Asset panel.

  • Select Data Sources.

In this view, you can see:

  • All data sources used by the asset

  • Which gateway is linked to each data source

For an asset to receive data:

  • Each asset data source must be linked to a gateway data source

  • A gateway must be selected for the data source

  • The same gateway should be used consistently for the asset

If no gateway is linked, the asset will not receive any data for that data source.

Also make sure that:

  • The correct gateway is linked

  • Only one gateway is linked to each asset data source

Linking the wrong gateway or multiple gateways can result in missing or incorrect data.
To edit the data sources, read the following article.

Access required

To view the Current Activity screen, your user account must have the appropriate rights.

You need:

  • GatewayManagement

If you do not have these permissions, ask the person who manages your Calculus portal to grant them to you.

Installations with multiple gateways

Some installations use more than one gateway.
In that case, multiple gateways may appear in the Data Sources panel.

If multiple gateways are present:

  • Verify which gateway is intended to read data from the machine

  • Ensure the asset is linked to the correct gateway data source

Verifying gateway data

To check whether a gateway is receiving data:

  • Click the arrow next to the gateway data source.

  • Open the Edit Gateway panel.

  • Select Current Activity.

This view shows the data the gateway is reading directly from the machine.
Gateway Current Activity typically shows data for approximately the last 24 hours.

If the expected data appears in the gateway’s Current Activity, the gateway is working correctly.
In that case, the issue is usually related to how the asset is linked to the gateway.

If the data does not appear, check whether:

  • The issue affects only this gateway, or

  • The same data is missing on all gateways of this type

Checking shared data sources

If the issue affects only one gateway, it is possible that a gateway data source is shared by multiple assets.

To check this:

  • Open Data Sources

  • Click the arrow next to the gateway data source

A panel opens showing all assets currently linked to that gateway data source.

If multiple assets share the same gateway data source and the asset relies on metadata, the gateway cannot determine which asset the data belongs to. In that case, measurements will not be generated.

Each gateway data source should be linked to only one asset.

Verifying gateway settings

If the data source is linked to only one asset, the next step is to check the gateway settings.

  • Open the Edit Gateway panel

  • Select General

  • Scroll to the gateway settings section

Make sure the gateway is using the correct settings.
If the gateway is not using the default configuration, enable Use default settings.

Access required

To view the Current Activity screen, your user account must have the appropriate rights.

You need:

  • GatewaySettings

If you do not have these permissions, ask the person who manages your Calculus portal to grant them to you.

Connection type: TCP/IP or RS485

Depending on the controller, the machine is using either:

  • TCP/IP, or

  • RS485

TCP/IP connections

For TCP/IP connections:

  • Verify that the IP address configured in the gateway matches the machine’s IP address

RS485 connections

For RS485 connections:

  • Verify that the baudrate and slave address match the settings used by the gateway

The values used by Calculus can be found in the gateway settings.
If these settings do not match the machine, data will not be read.

Apply changes to the gateway settings

Whenever gateway settings are changed, the gateway must be restarted before the changes take effect.

If none of the gateways of this type show the expected data, it is likely that the data is not included in the gateway configuration.
In that case, ask the person responsible for managing the Calculus portal to review and adjust the configuration.

Summary

Data source configuration determines how gateway data is linked to assets.
Incorrect or incomplete configurations can prevent data from being generated, even when the gateway itself is functioning correctly.

If data sources are configured correctly and no data is generated, further investigation is required.
