Not seeing any data? Check the data sources!

Prev Next

If the data you’re expecting does not appear at all in the asset’s Current Activity, this usually means the asset isn’t receiving any data from the gateway, or the gateway isn’t reading that specific data.
The next step is to check whether the asset is correctly linked to a gateway.
To do this, go back to the Edit Asset panel and open Data Sources.

Access required

To view the gateways and see which gateway is linked to an asset, your user account needs rights to do so. Specifically, you need GatewayManagement.

If you don’t have these rights, ask the person who manages your Calculus portal to grant them to you.

In the Data Sources panel, you’ll see all data sources used by the asset. For each one, you can also see which gateway is linked to it.
For the asset to receive data:

  • Each asset data source must be linked to a gateway data source

  • A gateway must be filled in for a data source to receive data

  • The same gateway should be used consistently for the asset

If no gateway is linked, the asset won’t receive any data at all.
Also make sure that:

  • The correct gateway is linked to the data source

  • Only one gateway is linked to each asset data source

Linking the wrong gateway or linking multiple gateways can result in missing or incorrect data. To edit the data sources, read the following article.

Multiple gateways in one set-up

Some installations use more than one gateway. In that case, you may see multiple gateways listed in the Data Sources panel.

Verifying gateway data

To check whether a gateway is receiving data, click the arrow next to the gateway data source to open the Edit Gateway panel. Then open Current Activity. This view shows the data the gateway is reading directly from the machine. Unlike the asset’s Current Activity, gateway data is only shown for roughly the last 24 hours.

If the data you’re expecting does appear in the gateway’s Current Activity, the gateway itself is working correctly. This usually means the issue lies in how the asset is linked to the gateway. In that case, double-check that the asset is using the correct gateway data source.

If the data does not appear in the gateway’s Current Activity, check whether:

  • The issue only affects this specific gateway

  • Or whether the same data is missing on all gateways of this type

Checking shared data sources

If the issue only affects one gateway, it’s possible that a gateway data source is being used by multiple assets. To check this, open Data Sources and click the arrow next to the gateway data source. A panel will open showing all assets currently linked to it.

If multiple assets are using the same gateway data source and the asset relies on metadata, the gateway cannot determine which asset the data belongs to. In that case, measurements won’t be calculated. Make sure that each gateway data source is linked to only one asset at a time, by reading the following article

Verifying gateway settings

If the data source is only linked to one asset, the next step is to check the gateway’s settings.
In the Edit Gateway panel, open General. At the bottom of the panel, you’ll find the gateway settings.

Access required

To view the gateway’s settings, your user account needs rights to do so. Specifically, you need GatewaySettings.

If you don’t have these rights, ask the person who manages your Calculus portal to grant them to you.

Make sure the gateway is using the correct settings. If it’s not using the default configuration, you can enable this by turning on Use default settings.

Changing gateway settings

Whenever gateway settings are changed, the gateway must be restarted before the changes take effect.

If none of your gateways of this type show the data you’re looking for, it’s likely that this data isn’t included in the gateway configuration.
In that case, ask the person responsible for managing your Calculus portal to investigate and adjust the settings if needed.
